Memory Verse:
John 10:10 – “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” (KJV)
Bible Reading:
Ezekiel 37:1-10 – “The hand of the Lord was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones, And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry… And I answered, O Lord God, thou knowest. Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus saith the Lord God unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live…” (KJV)
The Condition of Being Alive but Dead
There are people who appear alive physically, yet walk in spiritual darkness. They breathe, but spiritually, they are disconnected and without vitality. This condition remains a mystery to many believers who have not yet fully grasped the concept of spiritual life and death. It is a state marked by unfulfilled purpose, arrested spiritual growth, and inner hopelessness. Jesus Christ came that individuals might have life, and have it more abundantly, yet many remain unable to experience this divine life, despite being alive in the physical realm.
A number of Christians continue through daily routines without the active power of God flowing in their inner man. Some rise each morning, go to work, eat, and sleep, yet spiritually, they resemble dry bones in Ezekiel’s vision. Their inner being lacks divine fire. Their prayers feel empty, their worship lifeless, and their grasp of Scripture remains shallow. What accounts for such dryness?
This often happens because the enemy has stolen their spiritual vitality. The thief—Satan—comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. But even amid such spiritual attacks, Jesus offers divine life. Yet how many among the faithful are truly living in that fullness?
A Dead Spirit: What Causes It?
An individual may be physically active and healthy, yet spiritually lifeless for various reasons. Chief among these is sin. Sin separates humanity from God, and as a person continues in disobedience, their spirit begins to dry out and die. Furthermore, a lack of prayer and personal communion with God leads to weakened spiritual life. Prayer remains the lifeline of the believer. Without it, the spirit becomes like the bones in Ezekiel’s valley—dry and hopeless.
Another cause is spiritual complacency and apathy. When a Christian becomes satisfied with surface-level faith and no longer yearns for deeper intimacy with God, the spirit begins to wither. A person may still attend church, glance through the Bible occasionally, or sing hymns, but inwardly, their heart remains distant from God. This condition is dangerous, and sadly, many within the Church today fall into this category.
Moreover, resisting the Holy Spirit causes spiritual decline. A heart that consistently ignores or rejects the Spirit’s promptings will eventually lose touch with divine power. The Holy Spirit does not force Himself. When His voice is ignored repeatedly, He quietly steps back. Without His presence, the abundant life Jesus offers cannot be accessed.
The Solution: A Prophesy of Life
Just as God commanded Ezekiel to prophesy life into the valley of dry bones, so also is there a divine invitation for believers today to declare life over their spiritual deadness. Ezekiel’s spoken words brought supernatural life to the bones. In a similar way, words rooted in Scripture and spoken in faith can awaken a lifeless spirit.
In moments of spiritual dryness, a believer must speak God’s truth over their soul. Declarations such as, “I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. I will not live a life of spiritual death. I will walk in the fullness of God’s life. I am more than a conqueror. I receive the life of God in me, in Jesus’ name!”—these words carry weight when declared by someone who believes.
God grants authority to His children to speak life into dead circumstances. His Word is powerful, and when declared in faith, it revives and restores. Every dry and hopeless area within a life can receive breath again through God’s promises.
Living in the Abundant Life of Christ
There are Christians who live with a defeated mindset, moving through life as if hope and joy no longer belong to them. Yet, Jesus came to offer abundant life—not only for eternity but also for the here and now. This abundant life doesn’t exclude challenges but empowers the believer to rise above them.
The fullness of this life flows from the Holy Spirit. A Christian who walks in the Spirit experiences deep peace, enduring joy, and victory—even amid trials. Such a believer finds renewed power in prayer, vibrant worship, and divine wisdom in Scripture.
However, this life is not automatically experienced. It must be chosen daily. A follower of Christ must take authority over every spirit of heaviness, despair, or spiritual barrenness. A firm stand must be taken in faith, believing that the resurrection life of Christ is actively working. There must also be a constant renewal of the mind through God’s Word, rejecting the world’s empty patterns and embracing truth.
The Power of a Changed Life
Throughout the body of Christ, testimonies abound of individuals once spiritually dead who encountered the transforming power of God. Like the dry bones in Ezekiel’s vision, their lives were revived, becoming testimonies of God’s ability to resurrect the hopeless.
One such account tells of a woman held captive by depression and despair for many years. On the outside, she appeared successful, but inwardly, she was spiritually lifeless. Disconnected from God’s presence, she lived each day in sorrow. But then came an encounter with the living Word. She heard the message that Jesus gives life abundantly. As she began to speak life into her situation, and rekindled her relationship with God through prayer and fasting, a transformation occurred. Her spirit awakened. Joy, peace, and purpose replaced emptiness. Her story became a living example of how God breathes life into dry bones.
Take Action Today
Now is the time to stop living as a dead person walking. If you find that your spiritual life has grown dry and powerless, take action today. Speak life to your spirit! Begin a fresh relationship with the Holy Spirit. Spend time in prayer and in the Word of God. Let the life of God fill you again.
You have been given the power to overcome every work of the enemy. Do not allow the devil to steal your joy, your peace, or your purpose. The abundant life is available to you right now. Walk in it, speak it, and live it out in Jesus’ name.
