When The Lord Turned Again The Captivity Of Zion

When The Lord Turned Again The Captivity Of Zion

Zion sat in Babylon. The temple lay in ashes behind her, and the years of exile stretched ahead with no end in sight. Songs of the Lord hung on the willows by the rivers, and captors demanded mirth from a people whose mouths had forgotten how to sing. Babylon asked for a song of Zion, and singers laid their harps down by the water.

Then the Lord turned the captivity.

Nothing in Babylon changed overnight. The empire still stood. Gates still held. The journey home ran a thousand miles through hostile country. The word of The Lord arrived with a decree that Babylon could not revoke.

The psalmist records what happened in the hearts of the people that moment the report reached them.

“When the Lord turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them. The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.” (Psalm 126:1-3 KJV)

Dreamers awaken to a world that shifted. The report came, and the people stood with the same bodies in the same city, yet something in them rose up as though the years of sorrow had been a long sleep.

Laughter came out of mouths that had been stopped. Singing out of tongues that had hung silent.

The heathen took notice. Babylonian people watch captives receive news and say among themselves, The Lord hath done great things for them.

The report of the turning reached ears of those who held keys, and nations spoke of the God of Israel with words of wonder.

Psalms remembers the restoration of Zion as a single act, from the sorrow that came before it.

The captivity ended by the hand of the Lord, and the hand of the Lord moved a king named Cyrus to issue a decree that sent a remnant home to rebuild.

Ezra led the first company back. Haggai and Zechariah stirred the people to lay the foundation of the second temple.

Nehemiah came later with a commission from Artaxerxes to rebuild the walls. The gates were burned, and the rubble lay thick, and the work went forward one stone at a time under the watchful eyes of enemies who mocked from walls.

The psalmist continues in the same breath with a prayer for the second half of the work.

“Turn again our captivity, O Lord, as the streams in the south.”

The streams in the south ran dry in the heat, and when the rains came the dry channels filled with rushing water. The psalmist asked the Lord to do for the returning remnant what the rains did for the desert channels, to fill what had been emptied and to make the dry places run again.

“They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.”

The sowing and the reaping stand side by side. The sower goes out with the seed bag in one hand and tears on the face, and the same sower comes home with the harvest on the shoulders and joy in the voice.

The captivity of Zion turned in the days of Cyrus. God still turns captivities today.

Songs that filled the mouths of the returning remnant rises from the hearts of the faithful as the Lord open doors, restoring a season that brings a people home.

The Lord hath done great things for us, whereof we are glad.

LET US PRAY

Lord, turn again the captivity today.

In Jesus’ name, Amen!
