Can These Dry Bones Live Again?
The hand of the Lord came upon Ezekiel, and the Lord carried him out in the spirit and set him down in the midst of a valley. The valley was full of bones. The Lord led him around among them on all sides, and he saw a great many bones in the open valley, and they were very dry.
The Lord asked him a question.
“Son of man, can these bones live?”
Ezekiel answered with the plain truth of a man who knew his limits. “O Lord God, thou knowest.”
“Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus saith the Lord God unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live.” (Ezekiel 37:4-5 KJV)
The Lord told him to prophesy upon the dry bones. Ezekiel opened his mouth and spoke what the Lord gave him to speak. There was a noise as he prophesied, and a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone. He looked, and sinews came upon them, and flesh came up, and skin covered them from above. The bodies lay whole upon the ground, and there was no breath in them.
The Lord spoke again. Prophesy unto the wind, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord God, Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.
Ezekiel prophesied as he was commanded, and the breath came into them. They lived and stood upon their feet, an exceeding great army.
That valley stood for the whole house of Israel. The people said their bones were dried and their hope was lost and they were cut off. The Lord answered the despair of a nation with the same word He had spoken over the dry bones. Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel. The Lord put His spirit in them, and they lived, and He settled them in their own land.
The question the Lord asked Ezekiel was never about the dry bones. The dry bones were beyond recovery. The question was about the power of the One who was asking. Ezekiel answered well when he placed the outcome in the hands of the Lord.
The same question reaches every generation. A family member long gone from the faith, a sickness that has lingered for years, a business folded and forgotten, a marriage gone dry. The question comes in the quiet. Can these dry bones live again?
The answer rests in the Lord who asks.
The word of the Lord went to the dry bones before the breath came. No bone rose on its own. No bone assembled by human effort. Ezekiel spoke, and the Lord performed. Prophecy came first, then the shaking, then the flesh, then the breath. Each stage followed the word of the Lord spoken through the mouth of a man who stood in a valley of dry bones.
The Lord does the same today. The word goes out to the dry place, and the dry place comes alive. The word goes out to the dead situation, and the dead situation responds. The same Lord who filled the valley with an army fills the dry places of His people with life.
The Lord said, “I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves.” The Lord opens the graves. The Lord raises the dead. The Lord clothes the dry bones with flesh and fills them with breath. The Lord said, “I will put my spirit in you, and ye shall live.”
Can these dry bones live again?
LET US PRAY
Lord, breathe upon the dry places today.
In Jesus’ name, Amen!
